1909 Tigers remain unbeaten

A match-up of deadball teams, 1,660 fans were treated to a fine game at South End Grounds in Boston as the 1909 Tigers defeated the 1894 Boston Beaneaters (lovely name).  Ed Summers (1-0) gave a fine effort for Detroit. He was tagged for 6 hits and 2 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings. He had a no hitter through 4 innings. Boston tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.  George Suggs recorded the save, his 1st. The losing pitcher was Harry Staley (0-1). He surrendered 8 hits and 3 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings. Ty Cobb only went  1 for 4 with a single in this game. Catcher Boss Schmidt had 2 base hits.
On side note, Boston had at least 5 players that had over 100 RBI's that year in 1894..but they seemed to struggle in this game..until the end. But it wasn't enough. Obviously the 19th century teams always seem to struggle in my leagues for obvious reasons.
