Phillies comeback
Another exciting finish. Erskine Mayer had an impressive outing at Baker Bowl as the 1916 Phila Phillies pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the 1933 New York Giants 3-2. Phillies scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 9th inning scoring 3 runs on 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Bert Niehoff got things rolling when he drew a walk. Gavvy Cravath stepped up next and he tripled. Possum Whitted then drew a walk. After another out, Dave Bancroft came up and he drew a walk to load the bases. Bill Killefer stepped into the box and laced a base-knock. Phils finished with just 5 hits in the victory. The Phillies were no hit through 4 innings. The winning pitcher was Joe Oeschger (1-0) who allowed no runs in 1/3 of an inning. Fred Fitzsimmons (0-1) was hit with the loss in relief. Pat Moran was ebullient after the game, 'It's great to win a hard fought game like that. Our guys just weren't going to be denied. And did you see the fans - they were going wild! Yes sir, a very enjoyable win this afternoon!' The upstart Phillies are now 3-1 while the one time National League champs are 1-3. Giants lost the very first Stratomatic World Series. Quite an unusual start to their season. Both Phillies teams (1950, 1916) are at top of standings in NL East.
