Tigers fall in Oakland

At Oakland Coliseum, 1909 Detriot Tigers and 1988 Oakland A's met up for a night game. Right fielder Jose Canseco had 2 base hits as the A's beat the Tigers 6-4. Detroit was unable to recover after Oakland went ahead in the 3rd inning scoring 2 runners on 1 hit. Curt Young (1-0) went 7 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. Young was helped out by Gene Nelson who recorded his 1st save. Ed Killian (0-1) ended up with the loss. He was knocked around by the A's, allowing 9 hits and 4 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings. Strangely, both team's catchers got injured. A's win their 1st game, while Tigers lose their 1st. The loss keeps the Tigers from keeping up withe 1954 Indians who are in first in AL West now.
