Phillies crush Beaneaters
A night game at Shibe Park featured 1894 Boston Beaneaters and 1950 Philadelphia Phillies. Phillies cruised to a 11 to 5 victory over the Beaneaters. Phillies fans enjoyed the offense provided by Eddie Waitkus. He ripped a base-knock in the 3rd inning and hit a 'grand salami' to the delight of his teammates in the 8th inning. It was roller coaster of a game as the lead change hands 5 times. Boston made a nice comeback to take the lead in top of the 8th, but Phillies had the response in the bottom of the 8th. Homers by Sisler and Waitkus carried the Phils offense. Ken Johnson (1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2/3 of an inning. Marvin Hawley (0-1) was the loser in relief. He pitched 1/3 of an inning and surrendered 2 hits and no walks. A little trivia.. Hawley had only played in 1 major league game before he left baseball for good in 1894. He died 10 years later in 1904 at age 28.
